Like many collectible card games (CCG), Gems of War has troops in a variety of rarities (indicated by different coloured borders). The strongest and rarest of these are Mythic Troops. In this article I’ll explain what Mythic troops are, which are the best and how to get them in the game. The information here is for free-to-play (ftp) players – you have other options if you spend real money.
What Are Mythic Troops?
It’s important to note that there are two distinct types of Mythics: natural and ascended.
Natural Mythics could be called ‘real’ Mythics. They start at Mythic level and are extremely difficult to obtain. So how do you get them and what are the chances?
The main way to get Mythics in GoW without spending money is by opening chests. The chance of a Mythic depends on the type of chest – it varies from zero up to extremely low. The current chances are as follows:
|Chest Type||Mythic %||Equivalent to||Notes|
|Glory||0.01%||One in 10,000|
|Gem||0.1%||One in 1000|
|Event||0.11 %||One in 900||Only Mythics from current event|
Chests are opened using the appropriate keys. These can be bought with gold/glory/gems or obtained by other means such as Guild tasks, Adventure Board and Treasure Hunt.
Some Mythics can also be crafted in the Soulforge.
Troops in Gems of War can be ‘ascended’ to the next level of rarity. In theory it’s possible to ascend a common troop all the way to Mythic, though I’ve never done this. Ascending a troop requires spending extra copies of that troop in the Ascension Menu. The Ascended troop then get a new border and its maximum possible level is increased – allowing it to become more powerful through levelling up.
The number of extra copies required to raise a troop to the next rarity depends on how far above its original rarity it is. Ascending a natural Legendary to Mythic requires only five extra copies, but ascending a Common troop to Mythic will require a total of 190 extra copies! This reflects the fact that it’s much easier to get copies of Common troops than Legendary ones.
Although an Ascended Mythic can become powerful, it’s unlikely to be as powerful as a Natural Mythic. Natural Mythics tend to have better abilities and more mana colours, making them the best cards in general. However Ascended Mythics still have their place – I have an Ascended Kraken which I use in a lot of team builds.
The Great Mythic Rush
A new Gems of War Mythic troop is released by 505 Games on the first Friday of every month. If you watch global chat on this day, you’ll see many people finding copies of the new Mythic. How do they do this? What’s the secret trick that let’s them grab copies of the newly released Mythic troop?
The truth is that there is no secret or trick. Most of the people you see getting the new Mythic are long term high level players. They gain hundreds of the most valuable chest keys each month and hang on to them until a Mythic they like the look of is released. Then they use all the keys at once. So those people getting new Mythics on day one have exactly the same chance per chest as you or me – they just open a lot more of them!
Mythic is the highest rarity level for troops in Gems of War, however you can ‘nudge’ them a little further. A Mythic troop can have up to three further enhancements: Bronze, Silver and Gold. These provide bonuses which depend on the Role the game assigns to each troop.
To Enhance a Mythic troop it must be at level 20 with all three traits unlocked. You can then sacrifice medals and pay a large number of sould to have a chance of enhancing the troop.
In game design terms, Enhancement provides a good ‘sink’ for unneeded medals and sould.
