There are a total of 32 Heroes currently available in Storybook Brawl. Of these, 8 are made available to everyone when they start, the other 24 can be purchased. The 8 starter heroes are The Fates, Geppetto, Hoard Dragon, Jack’s Giant, Krampus, Merlin, Mrs Claus and Pup the Magic Dragon. Most of these are fairly weak (see my tier list) but they’re easy to play and good for beginners.
Every game, you’ll be offered a choice of four Heros. The first will be one of the starters. The second will be chosen at random from the advanced Heroes and will be available for you to play this game. That lets you get the feel for different Heroes and decide if you want to buy them. The other two slots contain two more randomly chosen advanced Heroes – these will be locked until after you buy them.
So how do you buy Heroes?
There are two currencies in Storybook Brawl: Fairy Dust and Gems. Fairy Dust is obtained by winning games, Gems are a premium currency that can be bought for real money in the game Store. Buying a new Hero costs 4000 Fairy Dust or 100 Gems. To buy a Hero, you can either click on it when it’s offered at the start of the game or in the Heroes tab of the Collection screen.
Once you buy a Hero, it’s yours forever. But how do you get to play it? How do you make sure that your new Hero appears as one of the choices when you play a game?
The fours Heroes are chosen at random every game. Buying a Hero doesn’t make it any more likely to be available for a particular game. The difference is that if the system does randomly pick a Hero you’ve bought then it will be playable rather than locked.
The more Heroes you’ve bought, the more likely that one or two of them will appear in the final two slots. But there’s still no way of guaranteeing which if any will be available for a particular game. I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes in a future release.
