At the end of a Wildermyth campaign, surviving heroes will be added to your Legacy. Heroes who age and retire during the campaign will also become part of your Legacy, as will those who die and for whom you build a tomb as a monument. Great, but what does that all mean? What does your Legacy do?
How Do Legacy Heroes Work?
Legacy Heroes in Wildermyth can affect future campaigns in two ways. Firstly, they can become available to hire. When a new character wants to join your group, it’s usually a randomly generated local with no particular skills. However if you spend additional Legacy Points then you are able to recruit one of your Legacy Heroes instead. Of course, the Legendary Hero won’t be full power – that would overbalance things, they’d be too OP. So the game automatically reduces their equipment and abilities to a more sensible level.
How does this work in story terms? How can you recruit a character who has already died? Well, the way I think of it is that any mythology has many strands. There are usually multiple stories about heroes at various stages of their life, some of which contradict each other. When you recruit a Legendary Hero you’re just tapping into a different branch of their story tree.
The other way in which Legendary Heroes can affect your game is through events. It’s possible for the event writer to make reference to heroes in your Legacy, meaning that your characters or NPCs can end up discussing the heroic deeds of one of your Heroes from previous games. The only event I know of in the base game that does this is Pulling Threads. Hopefully more will be added as I really like this mechanism.
How To See Your Legacy Heroes?
You can see your legacy characters by clicking on ‘My Legacy’ on the main game screen. Heroes are divided into five categories from lowest (Folk Hero) to highest (Mythwalker). If you want to remove a Hero from your legacy, click on the character then click on ‘Forget’. If you can’t see a Hero you’re looking for, move your mouse over the tree – they often hide behind it!
You can’t raise a character’s Legacy level from this screen. Instead, at the end of each campaign you can choose one character you used to be promoted to the next level. So the only way to get a Hero above Legacy level 2 (Local Legend) is to bring them back into another campaign and choose them to be promoted when you finish it.
The Legacy screen also shows your achievements and which elemental weapons you’ve unlocked.
