Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots
Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots (often referred to as Rockem Sockem) is a children's toy/game from 1967 that has received a new lease of life from Mattel today. In the UK it was originally known as Raving Bonkers.Rockem Sockem is a simple action game. Two plastic robots - the Red Rocket and the Blue Bomber - square up against each other in the ring. Each player manipulates their robot by means of a simple joystick like control with two butons.
The objective is simple - each robot is trying to knock the opponent's block off! A correctly aimed punch will cause the enemy's head to fly upwards signalling his defeat.
The game was originally released in 1967 and has recently been re-released by Mattel in a smaller version. In keeping with today's market the modern version has also been accompanied by variants (eg Superman vs Metallo - where Superman's head remains firmly attached to his body) plus related merchandise available to buy.
Over the decades the game has achieved an iconic status as a classic fighting game and has appeared in various elements of popular culture including The Simpsons, Transformers Beast Wars and Celebrity Death Match.
One of the most surprising thing about Rockem 'Em Sock
'Em is that - despite involving almost no skill - the
game remains popular amongst adults of a certain age.
This is presumably because for them - like me - the
game has huge nostalgia value.
