Spore
I don't usually cover computer or console games here on Galapemy, however I'm making an exception in the case of Spore. Why? Simply because I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a game before it had even been released. I'm sure there are many others who feel the same way. What Is Spore?
Spore is a simulation game from Will Wright and Maxis, to be published in September 2008 by Electronic Arts (EA). It promises to take simulation to new levels by allowing you to track and influence thee development of a race of creatures from a single spore through to intergalactic civilisations. The nearest I can remember seeing to this before is the 1990 game SimEarth, also by Will Wright and Maxis. I used to love SimEarth so I'm really looking forward to seeing what Wright can do now that computer technology has advanced almost 20 years!Spore actually consists of a number of different sub-games, or phases. A players actions in one phase affect the starting conditions in the next.
One of the fascinating ideas of Spore is the (optional) sharing of material between players in what is being called a "massively single-player online game". There will be no real-time multi-player interaction, however creatures and even worlds from one player's game may appear in that of another.
A stand-alone Spore Creature Creator was released in June 2008 and within two weeks over a million user-created creatures had been uploaded to the Sporepedia database! You can buy the full Creature Creator for $9.99 or download a freee trial version with around 25% of the "parts" available.
That's just a small introduction to Spore. The game looks set to become the PC gaming phenomenon of the decade.
