Wasgij

"Backards" Jigsaw Puzzles

The earliest jigsaw puzzles had no guide picture on the box to aid in assembly, making the rather more of a challenge than the puzzles you usually buy today. The Wasgij are a halfway step between the two where the box picture provides simply a clue to the final picture.

The Wasgij range has sold over a million copies in the UK alone. 2007 will see the release of a special 10th anniversary puzzle.

What Are Wasgij?

Wasgij puzzles are "backwards jigsaw puzzles" created and sold by Falcon Games (a subsidiary of Jumbo). The name "Wagij" is, of course, "Jigsaw" backwards. The puzzle itself is a normal jigsaw, what makes it special - and difficult - is the picture on the box lid. This is not the piccture on the completed puzzle. To solve a Wasgij you must use your imagination as well as simply assembling the pieces.

There are currently two basic forms of Wasgij available to buy: Original and Destiny. Both have a distinctive cartoon style of artwork.

In the Original series, the box picture shows a scene including a variety of characters. The target picture is the same scene at the same time but seen from the viewpoint of one of the characters in the box picture! Usually that character is looking at least partially out of the box in your direction, so a degree of imagination is called for. Essentially you need to have "eyes in the back of your head".

The Destiny series is more a case of "What happens next?". The box lid shows one scene, the finished puzzle shows the same location and/or characters at some time in the future. The Mystery puzzles are similar to Destiny but on a shorter timescale.

You can also buy Kids Wasgij designed for children and younger puzzlers.
