An American Celebration:
The Art of Charles Wysocki
Charles Wysocki was an artist who specialised in painting a cosy America and associated Americana that usually no longer exist. Descriptions of his work often include words such as "warm", "nostalgic" and "whimsical" and his style unashamedly primitive. Many people buy his work not just because they like the pictures themselves but also for the sentiments they conjure up.

Charles Wysocki was born in 1928 in Detroit, Michigan the son of a Polish immigrant. He was interested in art from an early age and after a two year stint in the army he attended the Art Center in Los Angeles. In 1959 he moved to Los Angeles permanently and formed an advertsing agency in conjunction with several artists. Although making money in the commercial field he still preferred the primitive Americana style for which he is best known today.

Wysociki's move to the mass market began in 1972 when together with AMCAL he published the first of the Americana Calendar series. Since then his popularity has continued to grow and you can buy Wysocki art on a huge number of products including prints, plates and jigsaw puzzles. In 2002 Decor listed him as among America's top 25 best selling artists.

Charles Wysocki died in Los Angeles on July 29th 2002.
