Pyraminx
Pyraminx is a popular puzzle that has sometimes been described as a triangular Rubik's Cube. In fact the Pyraminx was invented first but only became popular following the success of the Rubik Cube. What Is The Pyraminx?
The Pyraminx is a puzzle in the shape of a tetrahedron - that is, a pyramid with four triangular faces. Each of these faces is divided into nine smaller triangles and, like the Cube, the faces can be rotated around each other. Internally, the corner pieces are on axes around which the other pieces rotate. Each face is one colour and the objective is to rearrange a scrambled Pyraminx to its original configuration where the faces each show just a single colour.Ignoring trivial variations this gives almost a million possible combinations.
The Pyraminx puzzle was invented by Uwe Meffert who has patents on the design. You can buy the Pyraminx - along with other geometric puzzles such as the Dogic and Platypus - from his store, online at Mefferts. According to Meffert the Pyraminx is in more than 100 million homes worldwide. To celebrate its 25th year he produced a 25th anniversary metallic-tiled version.
