Triominos
Triominos - also sometimes spelt Triominoes or Tri-Ominos - is essentially a triangular version of dominoes. The game is published by Pressman Toys.A set of Triominos consists of 56 triangular tiles each with one of the numbers from 0 to 5 at each corner. The 56 tiles do not make up all possible combinations (there would be 76 if they did), meaning that there are some situations in which no tile will fit.
Triominos is played in a very similar fashion to traditional dominoes. Players take turns to place a tile alongside existing tiles. When they do so, numbers on adjacent tiles must match where they touch. Note that since Triominos have numbers on the corners instead of the sides, every tile laid after the first must match at least two numbers. All numbers surrounding a point must always be the same and it is often easier to think in terms of points rather than sides.
If a player cannot lay a legal tile then they draw a tile and pass.
For a simple game suitable for younger children, Triominos can be played simply as a matching game with the first person to play all their tiles the winner.
For adults, the rules include a scoring system. Essentially you score for the value of the numbers on the tile you play. This introduces a considerable element of luck in the game since so much depends on picking up tiles that not only fit but also score well. Tiles can vary in value from nothing (triple 0) to fifteen (triple 5).
Skill is introduced by giving bonus points for certain special arrangements of tiles (hexagons and bridges) as well as rewarding the first player to go out.
Over the years many different Triomino sets have been available to buy, including deluxe and special edition versions.
