Pinata
The pinata (or more accurately piñata) is a traditional entertainment for festivals and celebrations. It has become a popular idea for parties, especially with children who enjoy the excitement. What Is A Pinata?
A pinata is a treat-filled container that is hung up high, possibly from a tree or a ceiling. The pinata must then be broken open to allow the treats to spill out.Pinatas have been used in Hispanic society for hundreds of years at celebrations, feasts, birthdays, etc. The treats inside were traditionally candy (colaciones) or fruit but today are increasingly small toys and other such fillers. For an up market adult celebration you could even fill them with jewelry - providing it won't be damaged by falling to the ground!
The custom used to be for the people at the party to take turns in putting on a blindfold and attempting to break open the pinata with a stick. This is obviously more suitable to an outdoor occasion than an indoor party, especially one with kids.
The history of the pinata is uncertain. Although mainly associated with Mexico, some people believe that it was initially invented in China. Either way it reached Europe and was adapted into the Spanish traditions. The name is believed to have come from the Spanish pignatta - "fragile pot".
It was incorporated into the Christian symbolism with the first Sunday of Lent being designated Pinata Sunday. It also became part of the Catholic Posada in Mexico.
The traditional Mexcian pinata design was a seven pointed star. This was said to represent the Devil and the Seven Sins: smashing it with the stick of love released the rewards of piety.
Extra large pinata have sometimes been created for special events and publicity stunts. For example, to celebrate the launch of the Viva Pinata game the Microsoft Xbox 360 team built a 35 foot tall horse shaped Horstachio Pinata!
Children's Parties
Pinatas are a popular part of the birthday party for many kids today.Traditionally the pinata was specially made for the occasion. Today of course the modern parent is unlikely to have the time or the craft skills to know how to make a pinata, so instead they are often bought ready-made. You can either buy pre-filled versions or buy an empty pinata and add your own fillers. You can buy pinatas in traditional Mexican designs however few children are to worried by questions of authenticity. Many prefer modern "character" designs and brands such as Spiderman or Mickey Mouse or you can buy more generic designs such as dinosaurs or snowmen.
If you want you can go the whole mile and even buy a special decorated pinata stick! These should only be used under careful adult supervision.
If the idea of excited young kids waving sticks around scares you as much as it does me then you might prefer to abandon the idea of a breakable pinata completely and instead buy one of the pull-string varieties.
As always, put safety first and ensure adult supervision at all times.
