Set

Set is a pattern recognition game played with a deck of special cards. It can be played with two or more or as a solitaire puzzle. To me it resembles a competitive version of the logic problems often found in IQ tests. It was designed by M.Falco.

When you buy Set you are buying a special deck of 81 cards, each printed with symbols. Each card has four attributes and each attribute can have one of three values:

  • Shape
    Rectangle, oval or squiggle

  • Number
    One, two or three

  • Colour
    Red, violet or turquoise

  • Shading
    Full, partial or none

How to Play Set

The game is all about spotting a set. A set consists of three cards meeting the following criteria:
For each attribute
   Either
All three cards have the same value
   Or
All three cards have different values

Note that it's quite possible for a set to consist of cards that match in some attributes but differ in others. Note also that different means all different: Two cards red and one green would not form a set.

Once the principle of making a set has been grasped, the rules are simple: twelve cards are laid out and players look for a set. A player finding one calls "set" and - if correct - takes the cards. If incorrect then that player is out until after the next set has been found.

When a set is found, three more cards are dealt. If at any time all players agree that no set can be found then another three cards are added to those already on the table.

The game ends when all cards have been dealt and the players agree that there are no more cards on the table. Whoever has taken the most sets wins.

Set doesn't take long to play but does require concentration. It makes a good brain warm up before a longer game.
