Cornhole

Cornhole - also known as Corn Hole or Corn Toss - is a very simple yet fun game that can be played as singles or doubles. It is about as simple as a game can get - tossing a bag through a hole - and has a dedicated following. The game is usually played outdoors, however it can also be played inside. It's popular at picnics, tailgate parties and, of course, bars.

Cornhole is said to have originated in the West Side of Cincinattti, Ohio.

Cornhole Equipment

The equipment for cornhole is minimal: eight corn bags and a board with a hole in it to act as the target.

The target - the box - consists of a 2 foot by 4 foot surface with a 6 inch diameter circular hole positioned centrally 9 inches from the back. The board should be supported by tapered sides so that the front is 4 inches off the ground and the back 12 inches. The box is usually made of wood but you can also buy them in plastic.

The bags should be six inches square and weigh one pound each. Traditionally they would be filled with corn, today they are more likely to be simple beanbags. They should be in two colours, four of each.

Although you could make your own cornhole set, most people prefer to buy the equipment. You can buy cornhole boxes decorated in all manner of ways - logos of sporting teams are popular.

How To Play Cornhole

The basic cornhole game is very simple - there are, of course, many variations.

Each player takes four bags of the same colour. The players then take turns to throw their bags at the target. The distance varies - 27 foot is the "official" distance but some people play over longer or shorter distances.

Points are tallied up once all eight bags are thrown - a bag might be displaced by a later bag. Any bag that went completely through the hole scores 3 points. A bag completely or partially on the board which does not touch the ground at all scores 1 point.

Rounds (known as innings) continue until one player reaches 21 points. The player who scored most points in one round throws first in the next.
